Is Chronic Back Pain Normal?

10/11/2020

Chronic back pain — pain that lasts 12 weeks or more — is a leading cause of disability claims, and one of the major reasons for missed work days. Your spine has an incredible job to do: supporting your frame throughout your entire life, day and night. It’s susceptible to many types of injury that can result in ongoing back pain:
  • Herniated discs
  • Arthritis in your spine
  • Sports injuries
  • Falls
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Pinched nerve
  • Spinal stenosis - narrowing of spinal canal, putting pressure on nerves
  • Scoliosis - curved spine
  • Spondylolisthesis - vertebrae slipping out of place
Your spine can move out of proper alignment from many of the conditions above, causing not only back pain, but pain elsewhere in your body. Your skeletal frame has an ideal alignment that helps protect against injury when you’re in motion.
If your spine is out of alignment, for example, from being injured in a car accident, your body mechanics don’t work optimally and can result in further injury to your back and body from too much pressure placed on your vertebrae.
Chronic back pain isn’t normal. Chiropractic care can help relieve this type of pain. Modern Concepts chiropractors focus on correcting spinal misalignment to relieve your discomfort. Research studies show that spinal manipulation chiropractic practices are “safe and effective” treatments for back pain in adults.
Advantages of chiropractic care Chiropractic care does not rely on prescription drugs to ease your pain. Drugs only mask the pain and relieve symptoms temporarily. They don’t solve the problem. The opioid epidemic in America was fueled in part from overprescription of strong opioids; patients became addicted to them.
Chiropractic care also treats your back pain without surgery. Surgery for back pain should be a last resort. It can involve extensive recovery times and doesn’t always achieve stated objectives.
Chiropractic treatments for back pain Modern Concepts chiropractors use a variety of modalities to treat chronic back pain.
Spinal manipulation Spinal manipulation, using a computerized medical device, helps relieve pressure on your spinal nerve by opening up space between the discs. You simply lie on a special table with your clothes on while the doctor controls the manipulation, which he adapts to your particular situation.
In addition to realigning your spine to its proper position and reducing inflammation resulting from the misalignment, you may experience relief from tight muscles that have bunched together as a result of the misalignment.
Disc decompressionIf your chronic pain is from bulging or herniated discs, your Modern Concepts chiropractor uses a computerized machine to gently stretch your discs as you lie on a special table that moves slowly.
Passive modalitiesTo help unwind muscle tissue that has knotted up in your back, which often causes some of your back pain, your chiropractor may use a variety of strategies such as ultrasound, massage, or electrical stimulation.
Active stretches and exercisesOnce your acute pain subsides, your Modern Concepts doctor usually prescribes gentle stretches and special exercises. You’ll need to incorporate these as a regular part of your day, because they are going to help keep your back healthy and reduce your discomfort.

I'm glad you mentioned herniated discs considering I think I might have one in my own back. I need to have my back adjusted. I'll have to consider getting lumbar support as well.
